Aston Villa's Top-Four Hopes Dented by Brentford
Second-Half Goals Cost Villa Precious Points
Birmingham, England – April 6, 2024
Aston Villa's hopes of securing a top-four finish in the English Premier League were dealt a blow on Saturday as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Brentford at Villa Park. Despite taking an early lead through Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers, Villa surrendered their advantage in the second half, allowing Brentford to earn a valuable point.
Watkins put Villa ahead in the 15th minute with a clinical finish, and Rogers doubled the lead just before halftime with a well-taken header. However, Brentford fought back after the break, with Yoane Wissa halving the deficit in the 55th minute. Vitaly Janelt then equalized for Brentford in the 75th minute, sending the away fans into raptures.
The result leaves Villa in sixth place in the standings, four points behind fourth-placed Manchester United. With just six games remaining in the season, Villa's hopes of a Champions League spot are now hanging in the balance.
Brentford, meanwhile, moved up to 10th place with the point. The Bees have now won their last three games and will be confident of finishing in the top half of the table.
