Tens of Thousands Dead in Turkey-Syria Earthquake

Rescue Efforts Continue Amid Devastation

Latest Update

Tens of thousands of people have been killed and countless more injured after a devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on Monday.

Two days after the quake, families huddled in the cold as rescue workers desperately searched for survivors amidst the rubble. One of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded in Turkey, it has caused widespread destruction in densely populated areas.

In Turkey, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported that at least 2921 people were killed, with over 13293 injured. The U.S. Geological Survey measured Monday's quake at 7.8, with a depth of 18 kilometers (11 miles). Hours later, a 7.5 magnitude temblor likely triggered by the initial quake occurred nearby.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, but the scale of the disaster is overwhelming. Thousands of buildings have collapsed, leaving many people trapped under the debris. Aid organizations are rushing to provide assistance, but the cold temperatures and ongoing aftershocks are hampering their efforts.
