SEC Football Tiebreaker Rules for 2024 Season
Six Ways to Break Ties
As the SEC football season nears, conference officials have finalized the tiebreakers for who gets into the SEC Championship Game. The SEC will have six ways to break ties in the standings as the conference moves into a new era with the addition of Oklahoma and Texas.
- Head-to-head competition
- Overall record
- Wins against common opponents
- Winning percentage against SEC East or West opponents
- NFL Draft order
- Coin flip
The first five tiebreakers are the same as in previous years. The NFL Draft order is a new tiebreaker for 2024. If two teams are tied in all of the other tiebreakers, the team with the higher NFL Draft order will win the tiebreaker.
Head-to-Head Competition
The head-to-head competition tiebreaker is the most straightforward. If two teams are tied in the standings, the team that won the head-to-head game will win the tiebreaker.
Overall Record
If two teams are tied in the standings and did not play each other, the team with the better overall record will win the tiebreaker.
Wins Against Common Opponents
If two teams are tied in the standings and did not play each other, the team with the better record against common opponents will win the tiebreaker.
Winning Percentage Against SEC East or West Opponents
If two teams are tied in the standings and did not play each other, the team with the better winning percentage against SEC East or West opponents will win the tiebreaker.
NFL Draft Order
If two teams are tied in all of the other tiebreakers, the team with the higher NFL Draft order will win the tiebreaker.
Coin Flip
If two teams are tied in all of the other tiebreakers, a coin flip will be used to determine the winner. The SEC football tiebreaker rules are designed to ensure that the best teams in the conference play in the SEC Championship Game. The new NFL Draft order tiebreaker is a fair way to break ties between teams that are otherwise equal.
